چکیده

As a consequence of the exponential increase demographic and technological development human being, conflicts with natural environment are accentuated. Pollution or loss biodiversity represent examples problems that we must face to maintain balance between evolution beings conservation nature. However, there whose origin is not as modern those mentioned, return Neolithic find conflict man great predators. This condition has existed since then at this point in history, reaching very high levels tension developed countries, result depredation livestock. Wolf one species generates more currently suffering slight expansion. Although current laws mostly seek their recovery conservation, wolf experiencing difficulties due poor social perception it has. Faced situation, model been using geographic information systems which categorizes areas according probability cattle could suffer attack. Based on anthropogenic variables environment, greater lesser attack were evaluated, objective designing prevention plan reduce eliminate attacks. Since different authors demonstrate population control measures effective reducing attacks livestock, solution should be based preventive measures. The use designed will enable competent authorities apply these optimally, expenses allowing anticipate future conflict.

Parasite species of the endangered Iberian wolf (Canis lupus signatus) and a sympatric widespread carnivore

Parasites have a profound impact on wildlife population dynamics. However, until some years ago, studies on the occurrence and prevalence of wildlife parasites were neglected comparatively with the studies on humans and domestic animals. In this study, we determined the parasite prevalence of two sympatric wild canids: the endangered Iberian wolf (Canis lupus signatus) and the widespread red fo...

Habitat evaluation for the Iberian wolf Canis lupus in Picos de Europa National Park, Spain

A GIS multivariate model based on the Mahalanobis distance statistic is proposed to evaluate habitat suitability for the wolf Canis lupus in northern Spain. Results derived from the model show that wolves can potentially thrive in some habitats on the southern and western side of the study area where conflicts with the human population are minimum. However, some other areas that have been recen...

Taeniid species of the Iberian wolf (Canis lupus signatus) in Portugal with special focus on Echinococcus spp.☆

Taeniid species represent relevant pathogens in human and animals, circulating between carnivorous definitive hosts and a variety of mammalian intermediate hosts. In Portugal, however, little is known about their occurrence and life cycles, especially in wild hosts. An epidemiological survey was conducted to clarify the role of the Iberian wolf as a definitive host for taeniid species, includin...

To Eat or Not To Eat? The Diet of the Endangered Iberian Wolf (Canis lupus signatus) in a Human-Dominated Landscape in Central Portugal

Livestock predation by large carnivores and their persecution by local communities are major conservation concerns. In order to prevent speculations and reduce conflicts, it is crucial to get detailed and accurate data on predators' dietary ecology, which is particularly important in human dominated landscapes where livestock densities are high. This is the case of the endangered Iberian wolf i...

Effects of predation risk on elk (Cervus elaphus) landscape use in a wolf (Canis lupus) dominated system

Food acquisition and predation avoidance are key drivers of herbivore behaviour. We investigated the interaction of top-down (predator) and bottom-up (food, fire, thermal) effects by measuring the relationship between wolf (Canis lupus L., 1758) predation risk perceived by elk (Cervus elaphus L., 1758) and elk landscape use. We conducted fecal pellet and wolf scat surveys in three valleyswith t...
